hand & wrist conditions recovery

Getting a good result from surgery has a lot to do with the therapy that comes after surgery. Excellent results are seen in well motivated and dedicated patients who work hard with their daily home therapy. After a bad injury or major surgery your hand will never be exactly as it was before. The goal however, is to get it as close to normal function as possible.

Wrist exercises increase flexibility and help lower the risk of injury. Stretches are recommended as a preventive measure or to ease slight pain. However, they should not be used by people with inflammation or serious joint damage unless recommended by a healthcare professional. This is because, in those cases, exercise could cause more harm to your wrists or hands.

Various physical exercises which are helpful in the rehabilitation procedure are :

  • Extended arm : To stretch in the opposite direction: Extend your arm with your palm facing up toward the ceiling, with your free hand, gently press your fingers down toward the floor, gently pull your fingers back toward your body.
  • Make a Fist : Hand and finger exercises can help strengthen your hands and fingers, increase your range of motion, and give you pain relief. Stretch only until you feel tightness.
  • Finger Stretch : Try this stretch to help with pain relief and to improve the range of motion in your hands
  • Grip Strengthener : This exercise can make it easier to open door knobs and hold things without dropping them.
  • Finger Lift : Use this exercise to help increase the range of motion and flexibility in your fingers.
  • Thumb Extension : Strengthening the muscles of your thumbs can help you grab and lift heavy things like cans and bottles.
  • Thumb Touch : This exercise helps increase the range of motion in your thumbs, which helps with activities like picking up your toothbrush, fork and spoon, and pens when you write.
